| Youth help their peers through small businesses | | KABONDO, Congo (UM News) — Through small-scale businesses, Kabondo Center United Methodist Church youth are helping their peers who struggle with school fees and other expenses. In a shop built on the church compound, youth make and market ice to people who fish for a living. They also sell soft drinks and generate income from teachers who pay to use their printer. The Rev. | New date, place set for bishop's trial | | GLENVIEW, Ill. — The church trial of Bishop Minerva Carcaño will be moved to the North Central Jurisdiction of The United Methodist Church, Bishop Alfred W. Gwinn announced on Aug. 4. Gwinn, a retired bishop from the Southeastern Jurisdiction, will preside over the trial, which will begin Sept. 19. The trial will be held at the headquarters of Wespath Benefits and Investments in Glenview. Bishop Frank Beard, president of the North Central Jurisdictional College of Bishops, will assist active bishops in the college in selecting approximately 50 jurors from around the jurisdiction. Carcaño, who has been suspended for more than a year, is facing a church trial after a Western Jurisdiction committee brought charges under church law. The charges are undisclosed. | | | | |

| Great Plains Conference Conference offers post-disaffiliation grants | | TOPEKA, Kan. — The Great Plains Conference will offer grants to United Methodist faith communities dealing with the aftershocks of disaffiliation votes. Grants will go to Nebraska and Kansas churches that voted against disaffiliation but are struggling financially in the aftermath. Youth connect with God, one another | DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (UM News) — More than 2,500 attendees converged on Daytona Beach for Youth 2023, the quadrennial youth gathering from Discipleship Ministries. The four-day event incorporated worship, workshops, Bible study, fellowship time and service opportunities. Church leaders say they left feeling hopeful about the future of the denomination. Oklahoma's high court puts hold on meeting | OKLAHOMA CITY (UM News) — The Oklahoma Supreme Court on Aug. 2 granted the Oklahoma Conference's request for an emergency stay on a judge’s order to hold a special session, pending the outcome of the conference’s appeal. The stay means the conference can cancel the special session that was planned for Aug. 5. In a letter to the conference, Bishop James G. Nunn said, “This summer’s court cases are just a small bump in the momentum we have in the Oklahoma Annual Conference.” | | |
