E-ssentials: International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, BIPOC Support Circle, A Day of Climate Action, and more

Resources for the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

Created as a response to the killing of 69 protesters at a peaceful anti-apartheid demonstration in Sharpeville, South Africa, in 1960, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination has been observed around the world every year on March 21 since 1966. You can find relevant background and resources to support you or your congregation here, and on our anti-racism page.

Please note that this gathering is open exclusively to Black, Indigenous, and other people of colour in the United Church. If you have any questions, please contact Ren Ito in the Church in Mission Unit of the General Council Office. Register early, as space is limited.

On March 11, 2021, people of faith around the world will launch and participate in a huge faith-climate day of action called Sacred People, Sacred Earth. The event is organized by Green Faith International, and the idea is to organize a local gathering with your community and register it on the main event webpage or join one that has already been listed. Here are three events you can join:The Rev. Wendy Evans, who represented the United Church at the most recent UN Climate Conference in 2019, has written a blog post all about it.

Stories of Our Faith: We Will Not Give Up on Them

Brenda was close to nine months' pregnant and living in a tent. She and her partner Gail couldn’t find housing they could afford, so with no other options they moved into a homeless encampment. They started attending Wesley Urban Ministries, a Mission & Service partner, where they could access meals, showers, and housing support. Your gifts support Wesley’s Day Centre, where 100 homeless people like Brenda and Gail find help each day. Read the full story to find out more.
