E-ssentials: Moderator's Christmas Message, and more!

Moderator's Christmas Message

In her first Christmas message as Moderator, Rev. Dr. Kimberly Heath reflects on the surprising origin of the word "Bedlam" and how its meaning connects the original Nativity scene to the confusion of our modern world.

The story of the Prince of Peace being born into the chaos of Bethlehem teaches us that Christians do not run from the confusion. Instead, we are called to follow Jesus directly into it.

"We follow Jesus into it, seeking out the lost, welcoming the lonely, and setting a place at the table for everyone."

This Christmas, amidst fear, division, and uncertainty, the small things we do—as individuals and communities of faith—bring essential hope, peace, joy, and love.

Through the heartfelt mercies of our God,
God’s Sunrise will break in upon us.

Plein de tendresse et de bonté, Dieu fera briller sur nous une
lumière d’en haut, semblable à celle du soleil levant.

It Only Takes a Spark!

We all have that impulse inside of us: to give, to help, to make the world a better place. And as the hymn says, it only takes a spark to get a fire going.

This Advent, your gifts through Mission and Service are especially important. Your generosity will go towards helping children across Canada and around the world: children who are hungry, children who are living amongst wars in Ukraine and Palestine, children who are escaping disaster in their home countries.

That’s why it’s so important to listen to that spark of generosity inside of us all. Every child deserves to know that the world has not forgotten them, that we have not forgotten them. That they, too, are loved and cherished children of God.

100 Words of Hope: Saying "Yes" to the Call

[Image credit: The United Church of Canada]

Just over a year ago, I attended a retreat for ministry leaders in my region. I remember being reluctant to commit to it—I didn’t have time; I needed an advance more than I needed a retreat. Nevertheless, I said yes. The retreat used the Bibliodrama model—an immersive way to experience the scriptures. For several days, we entered the text of the Annunciation; Mary received the incredibly disruptive call to carry the Christ Child. And she said “yes.” At this retreat, I strongly sensed the Holy Spirit calling me to let my name stand for Moderator. A smaller call than Mary’s, but still disruptive and frightening.

It amazes me what happens when we take time to retreat and connect deeply to God: God still calls, still disrupts, and still leaves the choice with us. Do we say “yes”?

I’ve never regretted saying yes to God’s disruptive call. What about you?
