WCC News: Preparations for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2027 begin in Ireland

A meeting at St Patrick's Pontifical University in Maynooth, Ireland, organized from 31 August-5 September by the World Council of Churches (WCC) and the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity, kicked off the preparations for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2027.

The writing group for the 2027 materials is comprised of persons from the Irish Episcopal Conference and the Irish Council of Churches.

The theme for 2027 is “Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom,” based on Luke 12:32.

After the materials have been reviewed, and finalized, they will then be sent forward for translation. Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2027 resources will be publicized once the observances in 2026 have been completed.

The international editing team toured the Russell Library and College Chapel on the Maynooth Campus. “This allowed us to better understand the significant role of St Patrick in Irish spirituality and how theological education and pastoral formation, especially of Catholic priests have traditionally been integral to Irish culture and religious expressions,” said Rev. Dr Mikie Roberts, WCC programme executive for Spiritual Life and Faith and Order. “The group also had the wonderful moment to reflect as we attended a Choral Evensong at Christchurch Cathedral in Dublin.”

Roberts reflected that the meeting allowed him to have a better understanding of the complexities of the sociopolitical situation between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. “While this situation continues to be one that can be contested, it was revelatory to hear about the role of the churches in helping to bring about reconciliation and repairing the religious and societal ruptures,” he said. “They have been able to achieve this because though there are two different and separate political systems, there is only one ecumenical entity that incorporates all of the island of Ireland.”
