Orange Shirt Sunday is September 28

On September 30, wear an orange shirt to say that Every Child Matters. And on September 28, mark Orange Shirt Sunday in your community of faith.

This year in particular we ask you to honour the children with a gift or special offering to the Healing Fund, which supports initiatives for survivors of the residential school system and its ongoing intergenerational impacts.

On September 30, we also invite you to join in the Remembering the Children: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation event on Parliament Hill. This 90-minute program is a united effort of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, the Algonquin Nation, APTN, and CBC/Radio-Canada. It begins at 3:00 p.m. ET and all are welcome. Not near Ottawa? It will also be broadcast live on APTN and on YouTube.

Alvin Dixon Walk/Run Appeal Extended

The United Church of Canada Foundation has extended the Alvin Dixon Memorial Run/Walk appeal until September 7. The run has happened, but you can still make a donation to support the Alvin Dixon Memorial Bursary Fund, which was established to support Indigenous students who want to enter or continue post-secondary education or study at religious and spiritual centres.

Alvin William Dixon, a respected Heiltsuk First Nation Elder, was born on June 10, 1937. At age 10, Alvin was taken from his family to the Alberni Indian Residential School on Vancouver Island. After surviving years of abuse, he graduated, and then enrolled at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver as one of six First Nations students at the school. The Alvin Dixon Memorial Bursary was established in memory and honour of Alvin’s life and his dedication to The United Church of Canada and to education.

The United Church of Canada's Indigenous-Racialized Youth Scholars program is back for 2025, offering a unique opportunity for your community to learn from the next generation of leaders.

You can host a free, virtual presentation from one of these talented young scholars, who will share their powerful research on identity, Canadian history, and the impact of racism.

This is a chance for your community to engage with vital conversations and be inspired by new insights.
