The ‘big, beautiful bill’ has become a theological battleground
Martin Luther King Jr. once proclaimed that budgets are moral documents, revealing a nation's true values. As President Trump pressures the Senate to pass his sweeping domestic policy bill by Friday, July 4th, religious leaders are offering faith-driven arguments both for and against the morality of the legislation. Catholic bishops have issued rare dueling letters over the bill. Interfaith coalitions have mobilized in opposition, with many arrested protesting at the Capitol. Yet, Russell Vought, Trump's budget director and a self-described Christian "nation-ist," frames the legislation as faithful stewardship. "Christians should be stewards of a blessing that has been God-given: to live in this land, this particular land," Vought has declared.
