WCC news: Joint Working Group between Catholic Church, WCC marks 60 years of striving for unity

The Joint Working Group between the World Council of Churches (WCC) and the Catholic Church held its second plenary meeting of the current mandate (2023-2030), in Rome from 1-3 September, hosted by the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity.

The gathering brought together 22 members from both the WCC and the Catholic Church, representing diverse regions and church traditions.

Participants received updates on current initiatives of both partners aimed at strengthening collaboration and advancing the common search for Christian unity.

In his address, Cardinal Kurt Koch, prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity, reflected on the opportunities and challenges facing the Joint Working Group in today’s ecumenical context.

During the three-day meeting, members also deepened their understanding of the mission of the Roman Curia through exchanges with representatives of several dicasteries. They also met with leaders of Catholic ecumenical institutions in Rome and representatives of other Christian traditions.

“The opening sessions offered participants an opportunity to share the challenges faced by their local churches, to reflect together on the situation of Christianity in today’s world and to provide an update on the life of each partner,” reads a communique from the meeting.

The plenary reviewed the progress of its three study groups, which are focusing respectively on diverse understandings of salvation in a context of religious indifference; processes of reconciliation and peacebuilding; and challenges posed by intolerance and religious persecution.

The communique noted that Christians face abduction, forced conversion, harassment, restrictions on religious expression, and unjust laws, while believers of other traditions also endure violence, showing that the denial of religious freedom harms all of humanity.

“The group will look deeper into understandings of persecution and martyrdom, engaging with experiences of churches in various parts of the world and developing ecumenical tools for local churches to respond together in solidarity,” reads the communique.

A highlight of the gathering was the audience with Pope Leo XIV, who encouraged the Joint Working Group to persevere in its mission of fostering unity in a world marked by division and conflict.

Established in 1965, the Joint Working Group this year marks its 60th anniversary. Over six decades it has served as a platform for dialogue and collaboration, building bridges of trust between the Catholic Church and the member churches of the WCC. Today it continues to accompany the churches on their common pilgrimage toward visible unity.

WCC NEWS: WCC, Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity convene to hone plans for coming years

Leaders from the World Council of Churches (WCC) and the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity convened on 9 May to plan for the period 2023-2030.
10 May 2023

The leaders met in a prayerful and collegial atmosphere to evaluate past collaboration between the WCC and the Roman Catholic Church during the 2013-2022 strategic period. They then went on to share the 2023-2030 WCC strategic objectives, and to reaffirm and refine future ways of working, with particular reference to the work of the Joint Working Group, WCC commissions and collaboration with other dicasteries and Catholic organisations with reference to the current ecumenical and global landscapes.

A major highlight from those past was Pope Francis’ visit to the WCC and the Ecumenical Institute at Bossey in 2018.

Planning also included the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, along with other Catholic participation in WCC commissions and programmes. Catholic participation has been particularly strong in the WCC Commission on Faith and Order, and in the Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace Reference Group, as well as in the Commission on World Mission and Evangelism, Commission of the Churches in International Affairs, and Commission on Education and Ecumenical Formation.

The group  made a commitment to recovering the unique role of the Joint Working Group in the ecumenical movement as a tool for collaboration and as a consultative body that is able to discover and analyse ways of being church in a challenging world. The Joint Working Group observed its 50th anniversary in 2015.

Possible themes identified for the Joint Working Group’s future reflection include thinking of ways of providing ecumenical formation that introduces ecumenism to the new generation, and ways of being church in the context of new challenges brought on by globalization.

Both parts gave a positive assessment of the past period of collaboration and reaffirmed their will to continue to respond together to Jesus’ prayer that all his followers may be one so that the world may believe (cf. Jn 17, 21).

The meeting consisted of following representatives;

WCC

Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay (Uniting Presbyterian Church in Southern Africa), general secretary
Rev. Dr Kuzipa Nalwamba (United Church of Zambia), programme director for Unity and Mission
