Morning Psalm 5

¹   Give ear to my words, O LORD;
          give heed to my sighing.
²   Listen to the sound of my cry,
          my King and my God,
          for to you I pray.
³   O LORD, in the morning you hear my voice;
          in the morning I plead my case to you, and watch.

⁴   For you are not a God who delights in wickedness;
          evil will not sojourn with you.
⁵   The boastful will not stand before your eyes;
          you hate all evildoers.
⁶   You destroy those who speak lies;
          the LORD abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful.

⁷   But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love,
          will enter your house,
     I will bow down toward your holy temple
          in awe of you.
⁸   Lead me, O LORD, in your righteousness
          because of my enemies;
          make your way straight before me.

⁹   For there is no truth in their mouths;
          their hearts are destruction;
     their throats are open graves;
          they flatter with their tongues.
¹⁰  Make them bear their guilt, O God;
          let them fall by their own counsels;
     because of their many transgressions cast them out,
          for they have rebelled against you.

¹¹  But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;
          let them ever sing for joy.
     Spread your protection over them,
          so that those who love your name may exult in you.
¹²  For you bless the righteous, O LORD;
          you cover them with favor as with a shield.

Morning Psalm 145

¹   I will extol you, my God and King,
          and bless your name forever and ever.
²   Every day I will bless you,
          and praise your name forever and ever.
³   Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;
          his greatness is unsearchable.

⁴   One generation shall laud your works to another,
          and shall declare your mighty acts.
⁵   On the glorious splendor of your majesty,
          and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.
⁶   The might of your awesome deeds shall be proclaimed,
          and I will declare your greatness.
⁷   They shall celebrate the fame of your abundant goodness,
          and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.

⁸   The Lord is gracious and merciful,
          slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
⁹   The Lord is good to all,
          and his compassion is over all that he has made.

¹⁰  All your works shall give thanks to you, O Lord,
          and all your faithful shall bless you.
¹¹  They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom,
          and tell of your power,
¹²  to make known to all people your mighty deeds,
          and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
¹³  Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
          and your dominion endures throughout all generations.

     The Lord is faithful in all his words,
          and gracious in all his deeds.
¹⁴  The Lord upholds all who are falling,
          and raises up all who are bowed down.
¹⁵  The eyes of all look to you,
          and you give them their food in due season.
¹⁶  You open your hand,
          satisfying the desire of every living thing.
¹⁷  The Lord is just in all his ways,
          and kind in all his doings.
¹⁸  The Lord is near to all who call on him,
          to all who call on him in truth.
¹⁹  He fulfills the desire of all who fear him;
          he also hears their cry, and saves them.
²⁰  The Lord watches over all who love him,
          but all the wicked he will destroy.

²¹ My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord,
and all flesh will bless his holy name forever and ever.

First Reading 1 Samuel 1:1-20

¹ There was a certain man of Ramathaim, a Zuphite from the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah son of Jeroham son of Elihu son of Tohu son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. ² He had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.

³ Now this man used to go up year by year from his town to worship and to sacrifice to the LORD of hosts at Shiloh, where the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests of the LORD. ⁴ On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters; ⁵ but to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the LORD had closed her womb. ⁶ Her rival used to provoke her severely, to irritate her, because the LORD had closed her womb. ⁷ So it went on year by year; as often as she went up to the house of the LORD, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. ⁸ Her husband Elkanah said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? Why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?”

⁹ After they had eaten and drunk at Shiloh, Hannah rose and presented herself before the LORD. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the LORD. ¹⁰ She was deeply distressed and prayed to the LORD, and wept bitterly. ¹¹ She made this vow: “O LORD of hosts, if only you will look on the misery of your servant, and remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a male child, then I will set him before you as a nazirite until the day of his death. He shall drink neither wine nor intoxicants, and no razor shall touch his head.”

¹² As she continued praying before the LORD, Eli observed her mouth. ¹³ Hannah was praying silently; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard; therefore Eli thought she was drunk. ¹⁴ So Eli said to her, “How long will you make a drunken spectacle of yourself? Put away your wine.” ¹⁵ But Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman deeply troubled; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the LORD. ¹⁶ Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation all this time.” ¹⁷ Then Eli answered, “Go in peace; the God of Israel grant the petition you have made to him.” ¹⁸ And she said, “Let your servant find favor in your sight.” Then the woman went to her quarters, ate and drank with her husband, and her countenance was sad no longer.

¹⁹ They rose early in the morning and worshiped before the LORD; then they went back to their house at Ramah. Elkanah knew his wife Hannah, and the LORD remembered her. ²⁰ In due time Hannah conceived and bore a son. She named him Samuel, for she said, “I have asked him of the LORD.”

Second Reading Acts 1:1-14

¹In the first book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus did and taught from the beginning ²until the day when he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. ³After his suffering he presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. ⁴While staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father. “This,” he said, “is what you have heard from me; ⁵for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

⁶So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?” ⁷He replied, “It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. ⁸But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” ⁹When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. ¹⁰While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. ¹¹They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

¹²Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath day’s journey away. ¹³When they had entered the city, they went to the room upstairs where they were staying, Peter, and John, and James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. ¹⁴All these were constantly devoting themselves to prayer, together with certain women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, as well as his brothers.

Gospel Reading Luke 20:9-19

⁹He began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard, and leased it to tenants, and went to another country for a long time. ¹⁰When the season came, he sent a slave to the tenants in order that they might give him his share of the produce of the vineyard; but the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed. ¹¹Next he sent another slave; that one also they beat and insulted and sent away empty-handed. ¹²And he sent yet a third; this one also they wounded and threw out. ¹³Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.’ ¹⁴But when the tenants saw him, they discussed it among themselves and said, ‘This is the heir; let us kill him so that the inheritance may be ours.’ ¹⁵So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? ¹⁶He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others.” When they heard this, they said, “Heaven forbid!” ¹⁷But he looked at them and said, “What then does this text mean:
‘The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone’?
¹⁸Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; and it will crush anyone on whom it falls.” ¹⁹When the scribes and chief priests realized that he had told this parable against them, they wanted to lay hands on him at that very hour, but they feared the people.

Evening Psalm 82

¹   God has taken his place in the divine council;
          in the midst of the gods he holds judgment:
²   “How long will you judge unjustly
          and show partiality to the wicked?

³   Give justice to the weak and the orphan;
          maintain the right of the lowly and the destitute.
⁴   Rescue the weak and the needy;
          deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”

⁵   They have neither knowledge nor understanding,
          they walk around in darkness;
          all the foundations of the earth are shaken.

⁶   I say, “You are gods,
          children of the Most High, all of you;
⁷   nevertheless, you shall die like mortals,
          and fall like any prince.”

⁸ Rise up, O God, judge the earth;
for all the nations belong to you!

Evening Psalm 29

¹   Ascribe to the LORD, O heavenly beings,
          ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
²   Ascribe to the LORD the glory of his name;
          worship the LORD in holy splendor.

³   The voice of the LORD is over the waters;
          the God of glory thunders,
          the LORD, over mighty waters.
⁴   The voice of the LORD is powerful;
          the voice of the LORD is full of majesty.

⁵   The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars;
          the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
⁶   He makes Lebanon skip like a calf,
          and Sirion like a young wild ox.

⁷   The voice of the LORD flashes forth flames of fire.
⁸   The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness;
          the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

⁹   The voice of the LORD causes the oaks to whirl,
          and strips the forest bare;
          and in his temple all say, “Glory!”

¹⁰  The LORD sits enthroned over the flood;
          the LORD sits enthroned as king forever.
¹¹  May the LORD give strength to his people!
          May the LORD bless his people with peace!

Morning Psalm 22

¹   My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
          Why are you so far from helping me, from the words of my groaning?
²   O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer;
          and by night, but find no rest.

³   Yet you are holy,
          enthroned on the praises of Israel.
⁴   In you our ancestors trusted;
          they trusted, and you delivered them.
⁵   To you they cried, and were saved;
          in you they trusted, and were not put to shame.

⁶   But I am a worm, and not human;
          scorned by others, and despised by the people.
⁷   All who see me mock at me;
          they make mouths at me, they shake their heads;
⁸   “Commit your cause to the LORD; let him deliver —
          let him rescue the one in whom he delights!”

⁹   Yet it was you who took me from the womb;
          you kept me safe on my mother’s breast.
¹⁰  On you I was cast from my birth,
          and since my mother bore me you have been my God.
¹¹  Do not be far from me,
          for trouble is near
          and there is no one to help.

¹²  Many bulls encircle me,
          strong bulls of Bashan surround me;
¹³  they open wide their mouths at me,
          like a ravening and roaring lion.

¹⁴  I am poured out like water,
          and all my bones are out of joint;
     my heart is like wax;
          it is melted within my breast;
¹⁵  my mouth is dried up like a potsherd,
          and my tongue sticks to my jaws;
          you lay me in the dust of death.

¹⁶  For dogs are all around me;
          a company of evildoers encircles me.
     My hands and feet have shriveled;
¹⁷  I can count all my bones.
     They stare and gloat over me;
¹⁸  they divide my clothes among themselves,
          and for my clothing they cast lots.

¹⁹  But you, O LORD, do not be far away!
          O my help, come quickly to my aid!
²⁰  Deliver my soul from the sword,
          life from the power of the dog!
²¹       Save me from the mouth of the lion!

     From the horns of the wild oxen you have rescued me.
²²  I will tell of your name to my brothers and sisters;
          in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:
²³  You who fear the LORD, praise him!
          All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him;
          stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!
²⁴  For he did not despise or abhor
          the affliction of the afflicted;
     he did not hide his face from me,
          but heard when I cried to him.

²⁵  From you comes my praise in the great congregation;
          my vows I will pay before those who fear him.
²⁶  The poor shall eat and be satisfied;
          those who seek him shall praise the LORD.
          May your hearts live forever!

²⁷  All the ends of the earth shall remember
          and turn to the LORD;
     and all the families of the nations
          shall worship before him.
²⁸  For dominion belongs to the LORD,
          and he rules over the nations.

²⁹  To him, indeed, shall all who sleep in the earth bow down;
          before him shall bow all who go down to the dust,
          and I shall live for him.
³⁰  Posterity will serve him;
          future generations will be told about the Lord,
³¹  and proclaim his deliverance to a people yet unborn,
          saying that he has done it.

Morning Psalm 148

¹   Praise the Lord!
     Praise the Lord from the heavens;
          praise him in the heights!
²   Praise him, all his angels;
          praise him, all his host!

³   Praise him, sun and moon;
          praise him, all you shining stars!
⁴   Praise him, you highest heavens,
          and you waters above the heavens!

⁵   Let them praise the name of the Lord,
          for he commanded and they were created.
⁶   He established them forever and ever;
          he fixed their bounds, which cannot be passed.

⁷   Praise the Lord from the earth,
          you sea monsters and all deeps,
⁸   fire and hail, snow and frost,
          stormy wind fulfilling his command!

⁹   Mountains and all hills,
          fruit trees and all cedars!
¹⁰  Wild animals and all cattle,
          creeping things and flying birds!

¹¹  Kings of the earth and all peoples,
          princes and all rulers of the earth!
¹²  Young men and women alike,
          old and young together!

¹³  Let them praise the name of the Lord,
          for his name alone is exalted;
          his glory is above earth and heaven.
¹⁴  He has raised up a horn for his people,
          praise for all his faithful,
          for the people of Israel who are close to him.

First Reading Jeremiah 29:1 (2-3) 4-14

¹These are the words of the letter that the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to the remaining elders among the exiles, and to the priests, the prophets, and all the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar had taken into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon. ²This was after King Jeconiah, and the queen mother, the court officials, the leaders of Judah and Jerusalem, the artisans, and the smiths had departed from Jerusalem. ³The letter was sent by the hand of Elasah son of Shaphan and Gemariah son of Hilkiah, whom King Zedekiah of Judah sent to Babylon to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. It said: ⁴Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: ⁵Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat what they produce. ⁶Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. ⁷But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare. ⁸For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Do not let the prophets and the diviners who are among you deceive you, and do not listen to the dreams that they dream, ⁹for it is a lie that they are prophesying to you in my name; I did not send them, says the LORD.

¹⁰For thus says the LORD: Only when Babylon’s seventy years are completed will I visit you, and I will fulfill to you my promise and bring you back to this place. ¹¹For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. ¹²Then when you call upon me and come and pray to me, I will hear you. ¹³When you search for me, you will find me; if you seek me with all your heart, ¹⁴I will let you find me, says the LORD, and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and all the places where I have driven you, says the LORD, and I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile.

Second Reading Romans 11:13-24

¹³Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I glorify my ministry ¹⁴in order to make my own people jealous, and thus save some of them. ¹⁵For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead! ¹⁶If the part of the dough offered as first fruits is holy, then the whole batch is holy; and if the root is holy, then the branches also are holy.

¹⁷But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, a wild olive shoot, were grafted in their place to share the rich root of the olive tree, ¹⁸do not vaunt yourselves over the branches. If you do vaunt yourselves, remember that it is not you that support the root, but the root that supports you. ¹⁹You will say, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.” ²⁰That is true. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand only through faith. So do not become proud, but stand in awe. ²¹For if God did not spare the natural branches, perhaps he will not spare you. ²²Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God’s kindness toward you, provided you continue in his kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off. ²³And even those of Israel, if they do not persist in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God has the power to graft them in again. ²⁴For if you have been cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these natural branches be grafted back into their own olive tree.

Gospel Reading John 11:1-27

¹Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. ²Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair; her brother Lazarus was ill. ³So the sisters sent a message to Jesus, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” ⁴But when Jesus heard it, he said, “This illness does not lead to death; rather it is for God’s glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” ⁵Accordingly, though Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus, ⁶after having heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was.

⁷Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.” ⁸The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now trying to stone you, and are you going there again?” ⁹Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Those who walk during the day do not stumble, because they see the light of this world. ¹⁰But those who walk at night stumble, because the light is not in them.” ¹¹After saying this, he told them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to awaken him.” ¹²The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will be all right.” ¹³Jesus, however, had been speaking about his death, but they thought that he was referring merely to sleep. ¹⁴Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead. ¹⁵For your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” ¹⁶Thomas, who was called the Twin, said to his fellow-disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”

¹⁷When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. ¹⁸Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, some two miles away, ¹⁹and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them about their brother. ²⁰When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, while Mary stayed at home. ²¹Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. ²²But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask of him.” ²³Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” ²⁴Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” ²⁵Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, ²⁶and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” ²⁷She said to him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one coming into the world.”

Alternate Gospel John 12:1–10

¹Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, the home of Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. ²There they gave a dinner for him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at the table with him. ³Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus’ feet, and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. ⁴But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was about to betray him), said, ⁵“Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?” ⁶(He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he kept the common purse and used to steal what was put into it.) ⁷Jesus said, “Leave her alone. She bought it so that she might keep it for the day of my burial. ⁸You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.”

⁹When the great crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, they came not only because of Jesus but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. ¹⁰So the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death as well.

Evening Psalm 105

¹   O give thanks to the LORD, call on his name,
          make known his deeds among the peoples.
²   Sing to him, sing praises to him;
          tell of all his wonderful works.
³   Glory in his holy name;
          let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice.
⁴   Seek the LORD and his strength;
          seek his presence continually.
⁵   Remember the wonderful works he has done,
          his miracles, and the judgments he has uttered,
⁶   O offspring of his servant Abraham,
          children of Jacob, his chosen ones.

⁷   He is the LORD our God;
          his judgments are in all the earth.
⁸   He is mindful of his covenant forever,
          of the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations,
⁹   the covenant that he made with Abraham,
          his sworn promise to Isaac,
¹⁰  which he confirmed to Jacob as a statute,
          to Israel as an everlasting covenant,
¹¹  saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan
          as your portion for an inheritance.”

¹²  When they were few in number,
          of little account, and strangers in it,
¹³  wandering from nation to nation,
          from one kingdom to another people,
¹⁴  he allowed no one to oppress them;
          he rebuked kings on their account,
¹⁵  saying, “Do not touch my anointed ones;
          do my prophets no harm.”

¹⁶  When he summoned famine against the land,
          and broke every staff of bread,
¹⁷  he had sent a man ahead of them,
          Joseph, who was sold as a slave.
¹⁸  His feet were hurt with fetters,
          his neck was put in a collar of iron;
¹⁹  until what he had said came to pass,
          the word of the LORD kept testing him.
²⁰  The king sent and released him;
          the ruler of the peoples set him free.
²¹  He made him lord of his house,
          and ruler of all his possessions,
²²  to instruct his officials at his pleasure,
          and to teach his elders wisdom.

²³  Then Israel came to Egypt;
          Jacob lived as an alien in the land of Ham.
²⁴  And the LORD made his people very fruitful,
          and made them stronger than their foes,
²⁵  whose hearts he then turned to hate his people,
          to deal craftily with his servants.

²⁶  He sent his servant Moses,
          and Aaron whom he had chosen.
²⁷  They performed his signs among them,
          and miracles in the land of Ham.
²⁸  He sent darkness, and made the land dark;
          they rebelled against his words.

²⁹  He turned their waters into blood,
          and caused their fish to die.
³⁰  Their land swarmed with frogs,
          even in the chambers of their kings.
³¹  He spoke, and there came swarms of flies,
          and gnats throughout their country.
³²  He gave them hail for rain,
          and lightning that flashed through their land.
³³  He struck their vines and fig trees,
          and shattered the trees of their country.
³⁴  He spoke, and the locusts came,
          and young locusts without number;
³⁵  they devoured all the vegetation in their land,
          and ate up the fruit of their ground.
³⁶  He struck down all the firstborn in their land,
          the first issue of all their strength.

³⁷  Then he brought Israel out with silver and gold,
          and there was no one among their tribes who stumbled.
³⁸  Egypt was glad when they departed,
          for dread of them had fallen upon it.
³⁹  He spread a cloud for a covering,
          and fire to give light by night.

⁴⁰  They asked, and he brought quails,
          and gave them food from heaven in abundance.
⁴¹  He opened the rock, and water gushed out;
          it flowed through the desert like a river.
⁴²  For he remembered his holy promise,
          and Abraham, his servant.

⁴³  So he brought his people out with joy,
          his chosen ones with singing.
⁴⁴  He gave them the lands of the nations,
          and they took possession of the wealth of the peoples,
⁴⁵  that they might keep his statutes
          and observe his laws.

Evening Psalm 130

¹   Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD.
²       Lord, hear my voice!
     Let your ears be attentive
          to the voice of my supplications!

³   If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities,
          Lord, who could stand?
⁴   But there is forgiveness with you,
          so that you may be revered.

⁵   I wait for the LORD, my soul waits,
          and in his word I hope;
⁶   my soul waits for the Lord
          more than those who watch for the morning,
          more than those who watch for the morning.

⁷   O Israel, hope in the LORD!
          For with the LORD there is steadfast love,

Morning Psalm 5

Morning Psalm 147:1-11

¹   Praise the Lord!
          How good it is to sing praises to our God;
          for he is gracious, and a song of praise is fitting.
²   The Lord builds up Jerusalem;
          he gathers the outcasts of Israel.
³   He heals the brokenhearted,
          and binds up their wounds.
⁴   He determines the number of the stars;
          he gives to all of them their names.
⁵   Great is our Lord, and abundant in power;
          his understanding is beyond measure.
⁶   The Lord lifts up the downtrodden;
          he casts the wicked to the ground.

⁷   Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving;
          make melody to our God on the lyre.
⁸   He covers the heavens with clouds,
          prepares rain for the earth,
          makes grass grow on the hills.
⁹   He gives to the animals their food,
          and to the young ravens when they cry.
¹⁰  His delight is not in the strength of the horse,
          nor his pleasure in the speed of a runner;
¹¹  but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him,
          in those who hope in his steadfast love.

First Reading Jeremiah 18:1-11

¹The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD: ²“Come, go down to the potter’s house, and there I will let you hear my words.” ³So I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was working at his wheel. ⁴The vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter’s hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as seemed good to him.

⁵Then the word of the LORD came to me: ⁶Can I not do with you, O house of Israel, just as this potter has done? says the LORD. Just like the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel. ⁷At one moment I may declare concerning a nation or a kingdom, that I will pluck up and break down and destroy it, ⁸but if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from its evil, I will change my mind about the disaster that I intended to bring on it. ⁹And at another moment I may declare concerning a nation or a kingdom that I will build and plant it, ¹⁰but if it does evil in my sight, not listening to my voice, then I will change my mind about the good that I had intended to do to it. ¹¹Now, therefore, say to the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: Thus says the LORD: Look, I am a potter shaping evil against you and devising a plan against you. Turn now, all of you from your evil way, and amend your ways and your doings.

Second Reading Romans 8:1-11

¹There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. ²For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. ³For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do: by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and to deal with sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, ⁴so that the just requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. ⁵For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. ⁶To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. ⁷For this reason the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God's law — indeed it cannot, ⁸and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

⁹But you are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. ¹⁰But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. ¹¹If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit that dwells in you.

Gospel Reading John 6:27-40

²⁷“Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal.” ²⁸Then they said to him, “What must we do to perform the works of God?” ²⁹Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” ³⁰So they said to him, “What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? ³¹Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” ³²Then Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. ³³For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” ³⁴They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.”

³⁵Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. ³⁶But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. ³⁷Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and anyone who comes to me I will never drive away; ³⁸for I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me. ³⁹And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. ⁴⁰This is indeed the will of my Father, that all who see the Son and believe in him may have eternal life; and I will raise them up on the last day.”

Evening Psalm 27

¹   The LORD is my light and my salvation;
          whom shall I fear?
     The LORD is the stronghold of my life;
          of whom shall I be afraid?

²   When evildoers assail me
          to devour my flesh —
     my adversaries and foes —
          they shall stumble and fall.

³   Though an army encamp against me,
          my heart shall not fear;
     though war rise up against me,
          yet I will be confident.

⁴   One thing I asked of the LORD,
          that will I seek after:
     to live in the house of the LORD
          all the days of my life,
     to behold the beauty of the LORD,
          and to inquire in his temple.

⁵   For he will hide me in his shelter
          in the day of trouble;
     he will conceal me under the cover of his tent;
          he will set me high on a rock.

⁶   Now my head is lifted up
          above my enemies all around me,
     and I will offer in his tent
          sacrifices with shouts of joy;
     I will sing and make melody to the LORD.

⁷   Hear, O LORD, when I cry aloud,
          be gracious to me and answer me!
⁸   “Come,” my heart says, “seek his face!”
          Your face, LORD, do I seek.
⁹        Do not hide your face from me.

     Do not turn your servant away in anger,
          you who have been my help.
     Do not cast me off, do not forsake me,
          O God of my salvation!
¹⁰   If my father and mother forsake me,
          the LORD will take me up.

¹¹  Teach me your way, O LORD,
          and lead me on a level path
          because of my enemies.
¹²  Do not give me up to the will of my adversaries,
          for false witnesses have risen against me,
          and they are breathing out violence.

¹³  I believe that I shall see the goodness of the LORD
          in the land of the living.
¹⁴   Wait for the LORD;
          be strong, and let your heart take courage;
          wait for the LORD!

Evening Psalm 51

¹   Have mercy on me, O God,
          according to your steadfast love;
     according to your abundant mercy
          blot out my transgressions.
²   Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
          and cleanse me from my sin.

³   For I know my transgressions,
          and my sin is ever before me.
⁴   Against you, you alone, have I sinned,
          and done what is evil in your sight,
     so that you are justified in your sentence
          and blameless when you pass judgment.

⁵ Indeed, I was born guilty,
a sinner when my mother conceived me.

⁶   You desire truth in the inward being;
          therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart.
⁷   Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
          wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
⁸   Let me hear joy and gladness;
          let the bones that you have crushed rejoice.
⁹   Hide your face from my sins,
          and blot out all my iniquities.

¹⁰  Create in me a clean heart, O God,
          and put a new and right spirit within me.
¹¹  Do not cast me away from your presence,
          and do not take your holy spirit from me.
¹²  Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
          and sustain in me a willing spirit.

¹³  Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
          and sinners will return to you.
¹⁴  Deliver me from bloodshed, O God,
          O God of my salvation,
          and my tongue will sing aloud of your deliverance.

¹⁵  O Lord, open my lips,
          and my mouth will declare your praise.
¹⁶  For you have no delight in sacrifice;
          if I were to give a burnt offering, you would not be pleased.
¹⁷  The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit;
          a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

¹⁸  Do good to Zion in your good pleasure;
          rebuild the walls of Jerusalem,
¹⁹  then you will delight in right sacrifices,
          in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings;
          then bulls will be offered on your altar.
