WCC news: WCC general secretary to Faith and Order: “your commitment to deep theological reflection is vital”

Speaking to the World Council of Churches (WCC) Commission on Faith and Order during the commission’s historic meeting in Indonesia, WCC general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay expressed gratitude for the commission’s work, and hope for the ecumenical journey in 2025. Photo: PGI 2 February 2024 “This marks a significant milestone in our journey, and I am filled with gratitude for the commitment and dedication each of you brings to the ecumenical table,” said Pillay. “The online interactions in the last months of last year, including the Faith and Order Commission and the Nicaea 2025 Steering Group Meetings, served as a testament to your resilience and adaptability.” Pillay also noted that Faith and Order has played a foundational role in illuminating the path for the WCC from its inception. “The theological insights derived from the past Faith and Order processes do not merely establish a foundational framework but extend well beyond the WCC fellowship, contributing to cultivating dialogue and communion among churches,” he said. “The mission of Faith and Order serves also as a catalyst for a more profound ecumenical engagement with the world.” Pillay reflected on the significance of the Faith and Order meeting in Indonesia. “The religious diversity in this region serves as a vibrant backdrop for your deliberations, reminding us of the global nature of our mission,” he said. “By coming together in North Sulawesi, we deepen our understanding of the challenges and opportunities unique to this context, enriching our theological discourse and strengthening our fellowship with local churches.” The commission’s work is also integral to the preparation of the broader vision of WCC for 2025, noted Pillay.  “How do we provide space to study and dialogue with new and emerging theologies that may be different from our own church traditions?” he asked. “We acknowledge that our journey is one of constant learning and growth.” WCC general secretary address to the Faith and Order Commission meeting in Indonesia WCC Commission on Faith and Order to convene in Indonesia (WCC news release, 31 January 2024) See more

WCC NEWS: In conversation with Christiane Ehrengruber: unveiling the power of prayer and identity

Meet Christiane Ehrengruber, a 27-year-old professional working in digital communication and social media for Evangelische Mission Weltweit in Germany. With a background in Protestant theology and a history of volunteering in university politics and international ecumenism, Ehrengruber’s insights into the significance of prayer, the theme of Christian unity, and the challenges faced by churches provide a unique perspective on navigating faith in today's world. Photo: WSCF 01 February 2024 For Ehrengruber, prayer is not just a religious ritual but an integral part of her identity and faith.  "In constant conversation with God, I feel God’s presence in my life and can gain new perspectives. My prayers are not always about the most beautiful words but about honesty and sincerity. It is very important to me to always be in conversation with God,” shared Ehrengruber. Reflecting on the theme for the week of prayer for Christian Unity—“You shall love the Lord your God... and your neighbor as yourself" (Luke 10:27)—she underscores the importance of love in different dimensions. "The commandment of love is immensely important. It emphasizes love for God, love for others, and love for oneself. No war, no exclusivism, no exclusion of minorities, no discrimination can take place if radical love of neighbor is lived,” said Ehrengruber. Ehrengruber relates the theme to challenges in Germany, particularly the rise of rightwing pressure. "In Germany, we are currently experiencing various challenges that could do with a little more love for each other. There has been pressure from the right for several years now, which is very dangerous. I am pleased that many people are demonstrating these days and standing up against inhuman ideas,” shared Ehrengruber. According to Ehrengruber, true Christian unity is about embracing differences and accepting each other's identity, “knowing that we are all siblings of the same heavenly parent,” commented Ehrengruber. Looking at the broader global context, Ehrengruber reflected on conflicts, climate issues, and increasing secularization. "The climate catastrophe will exacerbate existing crises and difficulties, posing a particularly devastating impact, especially on already marginalized groups. It is crucial as a global community to responsibly utilize the resources available to us and actively engage in conservation efforts. In the context of Germany, there exists a historical responsibility, as we have been living beyond our means for an extended period. Acknowledging this reality, it becomes imperative to collaboratively work towards finding sustainable solutions that safeguard not only our lives but also the lives of animals and plants in the long term,” said Ehrengruber.
