Orange Shirt Day

Photo of a Zoom meeting in which the participants are wearing orange shirts.

The summer of 2021 was a summer of orange shirts as Indigenous communities across the country shared the truth they have always known: that many of the children who never returned from residential schools remain on the grounds of those institutions in unmarked burial sites. These communities are now seeking to honour the missing children.

This Orange Shirt Day is also the first observance of a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. For settler Christians in particular, this is a time when we can reflect on our role in colonialism and the residential school system, and our ongoing responsibility to make reparations. Find out more.

With the federal election just weeks away, why not explore some titles by two United Church ministers who enjoyed political careers alongside their ministry? In The Blaikie Report, Bill Blaikie reflects on three decades in the House of Commons. And The Queer Evangelist is Rev. Dr. Cheri DiNovo's recently released memoir, charting her life story from living on the streets as a teen to becoming an MPP and social justice advocate.

Messages of urgency brought to "COVID & Beyond" process

The third “circle” of the World Communion of Reformed Churches’ (WCRC) “COVID & Beyond” discernment process concluded with an online meeting on Wednesday, 4 August.

“We are gathering all that we have heard over the last two months, placing it before this group, and attempting to discern forward particularly in terms of what we as a Communion and as member churches can do together,” said Philip Vinod Peacock, WCRC executive secretary for justice and witness.

Themed around “witnessing” and held during the period of Pentecost, this circle included presentations from and about NIFEA (New International Financial and Economic Architecture), human sexuality, youth, AIPRAL (Latin America), CANAAC (Caribbean and North America), and NEAAC (Northeast Asia).
